Sarmale

The image shows two examples of traditional Romanian dishes known as sarmale. These are cabbage rolls filled with a mixture of minced meat, rice, and spices, typically cooked in a tomato-based sauce.

1. The first photo (top) depicts sarmale cooked in the traditional way, layered in a pot with pieces of smoked meat in between. The golden color and rich tomato sauce suggest they have been slow-cooked, which is key to enhancing their flavor.

2. The second photo (bottom) presents a more decorative arrangement, where the sarmale are stacked into a dome shape. This presentation style is often used for festive occasions or special events.

Sarmale are a staple of Romanian cuisine, especially during holidays and family gatherings. They are usually served with sour cream and polenta (mămăligă). Their flavor often improves after sitting for a few hours, making them even more delicious.
